Progress® Automate MFT is a cloud-native managed file transfer (MFT) platform that centralizes orchestration in the cloud while executing file transfers locally through lightweight agents. It is designed for hybrid and distributed environments where reliability, security and execution control matter.
Modern file workflows rarely stay in one place. Files move between on-premises systems, cloud platforms, business applications, partner environments and remote locations. Automate MFT is designed for that reality, combining centralized orchestration with agent-based execution so teams can automate transfers across hybrid and distributed IT environments without relying on bulky infrastructure or brittle scripts.
Automate MFT is hosted on AWS and delivered as a globally accessible SaaS platform with data centers in the United States and Europe. At the core of Automate MFT is a coordinator–agent topology designed for modern, distributed IT environments.
This regional hosting model and agent architecture supports:
Geographic proximity for latency‑sensitive orchestration
Data residency alignment for customers with regional requirements
Built‑in high availability managed by Progress as part of the SaaS service
Centralized file transfer control and local execution of tasks near the data source
Because file execution occurs at the agent level (not in the management plane), customer data does not need to be routed through a centralized cloud server to be automated. Only task metadata and logs are aggregated centrally for auditing and monitoring.
For many organizations, infrastructure location is not just an IT consideration. It is closely tied to internal governance models, customer expectations and regulatory obligations.
Automate MFT is designed to support these requirements by combining regional cloud availability with local execution control, allowing teams to automate file transfer workflows without forcing execution into a single location.
With Automate MFT, file execution does not have to occur in a single, centralized location. Execution is deliberately separated from management. Automate MFT uses a coordinator–agent architecture in which lightweight agents execute file transfers where the data resides—on‑premises, in private cloud environments or within restricted networks.
An Automate MFT agent is a lightweight service that executes file transfer and automation tasks where your data lives. There are two types of agents: Progress‑hosted agents and self‑hosted agents.
Progress‑hosted agents are provisioned automatically for cloud‑to‑cloud and public endpoint workflows, executing tasks on demand and terminating after completion.
Self‑hosted agents run as Windows or Linux services and enable local execution within established security boundaries behind the firewall, as well as with public cloud endpoints.
In all cases, file movement is performed by the agent directly between endpoints, while the centralized service retains orchestration logic, execution metadata and audit logs. This model allows organizations to standardize governance and visibility across regions, field sites or remote locations while maintaining control over where execution occurs.
By combining regional service availability with flexible, agent‑based MFT, Automate MFT can help organizations support data residency strategies and boundary‑aware architectures without requiring re‑architecture of existing environments or sacrificing centralized oversight.
Automate MFT is designed for organizations that depend on file transfer as a core operational backbone. Its availability, scalability and resiliency are built into the modern cloud-native architecture to support growing, global and always‑on environments.
Automate MFT avoids the traditional scaling limits of server‑centric MFT platforms. As organizations add new partners, regions, systems or workloads, they extend execution by deploying additional agents without re‑architecting infrastructure or introducing new central bottlenecks.
Automate MFT provides agent pooling to support resilient execution at scale. Multiple self-hosted agents can be grouped into logical pools, allowing tasks to run on any available agent in the pool. Execution is handled dynamically, improving throughput and resiliency without additional configuration.
Automate MFT is delivered as a fully managed, cloud‑native SaaS platform operated by Progress. Our team of file transfer experts keep the service up to date so you can reduce the headache of weekend upgrade projects, planned downtime or patching cycles.
Automate MFT is available through AWS Marketplace, giving organizations a streamlined way to adopt cloud‑native file transfer automation while aligning with existing cloud and procurement standards. This option is particularly well suited for teams standardizing on AWS‑based purchasing, governance and cost management models.
