It is not sufficient to adopt AI for its novelty: responsible AI requires that we identify use cases where AI adds real value without compromising fairness, transparency or sustainability. In an era of hype around generative AI, many problems do not warrant an AI-based solution. Ethical AI in SaaS is about maximizing benefits—such as productivity gains and better customer experiences—and minimizing risks—such as bias, privacy violations and environmental impact.
This paper presents a framework for prioritizing AI use cases in a responsible way. We discuss the motivations for ethical AI, examine the ecological costs of large-scale AI and argue that in some contexts, the most responsible decision is not deploying AI at all.
