OpenEdge applications are built for long-term business value, but the application server technologies that support them evolve on a much faster timetable. Security vulnerabilities, framework updates, and third-party support timelines often require action before organizations are ready for a full platform upgrade.
PAS for OpenEdge 3.0 introduces a new delivery and lifecycle model that separates the application server runtime and its required third-party dependencies from the OpenEdge release cycle. This gives organizations greater flexibility to keep the application server layer current while preserving the OpenEdge foundation they rely on today.
PAS for OpenEdge 3.0 is the first release of the version-independent PAS for OpenEdge model. Instead of bundling the application server runtime inside every OpenEdge installation, the runtime is installed and maintained separately, allowing it to follow its own release cadence.
OpenEdge continues to provide:
PAS for OpenEdge 3.0 provides:
Faster Access to Security and Framework Updates
Respond more quickly to security vulnerabilities and framework updates without waiting for a full OpenEdge release cycle.
Change Only What Needs to Change
Update the application server layer without changing the OpenEdge database, ABL runtime, or other unrelated OpenEdge components.
Simplify Long-Term Maintenance
Reduce dependency drift across supported OpenEdge environments and simplify ongoing application server maintenance.
Greater Lifecycle Control
Manage application server updates independently while maintaining the same OpenEdge foundation, licensing model, and compatibility relationship.
PAS for OpenEdge 3.0.0 will initially support OpenEdge 13.0.
Future releases will expand support to:
This phased approach allows additional supported OpenEdge versions to benefit from the independent PAS for OpenEdge lifecycle while maintaining the existing OpenEdge architecture and licensing model.
PAS for OpenEdge 3.0 represents the third generation of PAS for OpenEdge technology.
The PAS for OpenEdge product name reflects its continued evolution and maturity while introducing an independent installation, delivery, and update lifecycle.
Organizations running previous-generation PAS for OpenEdge instances can migrate by re-registering existing instances. Application code and instance-specific settings remain unchanged during migration, and organizations can revert to the previous-generation runtime if needed.
