Classify content

Overview

Using classifications, you can organize content items, such as news, events, and images.

In Sitefinity CMS, there are two types of classifications:

  • Simple list -
Simple lists group content into a specified set of categories. There is no relationship between the categories in the simple list. They are peer members of a single structure.

  • Hierarchical list - Hierarchical lists group content in a tree structure of branches and sub-branches. The relationship between a top-level entry and a lower-level entry in the hierarchy usually indicates a differentiation of the top classification by a particular attribute.

EXAMPLE: Dogsare one tag and Catsare another. When Dogsand Catsare simple lists, all items tagged as Dogsare equal members of Dogs, and have no relationship with cats. When you have a top-level category Animals with subcategories Dogsand Cats, all cats are Catsand all dogs are Dogs, yet both are related through the common root in that they are both Animals.

IMPORTANT: Classifications are shared across different sites. If you are using multiple sites, changing a classification on one site will change the classification on every other site that uses it.
