Story

Challenge

VMware is a leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions, enabling businesses to thrive in the mobile cloud era. Customers rely on VMware to help them transform the way they build, deliver and consume IT resources in a manner that is evolutionary and based on their specific needs.

VMware released the company’s My VMware mobile application in 2012 as a first-to-market solution. The My VMware mobile app provides VMware customers with an easy-to-use interface to access their current license keys and support information for the full range of VMware products.

Keeping up with the pace of change in mobile can be challenging—companies need to support many different mobile devices and operating systems, all while securing, scaling and maintaining the backend platform. To aid with this, VMware was looking for a mobile delivery platform that provided a more cost-effective, enterprise-class approach—one that was fully managed so the company could free up resources to focus on its apps.

Solution

After assessing the landscape, VMware IT turned to Progress® Kinvey™ and vCloud Air for help.

Migrating the My VMware app to Kinvey on vCloud Air took less than four weeks: two weeks for a few code tweaks and two weeks for quality assurance testing. VMware only had to make changes to two areas to launch the app on the Kinvey serverless application delivery platform:

1. Identity Management: This is where VMware added OAuth 2 to the frontend code and updates to the log-in screen
2. Data Requests: The second change was to the VMware app’s data requests, to point them to Kinvey’s backend

With those two changes, VMware IT gained the benefits of a more cost-effective and fully managed enterprise-class platform. Kinvey on vCloud Air provides VMware with seamless scalability as well as a secure, fully featured platform to easily develop and manage new applications.

“We needed an enterprise class infrastructure for our mobile applications just like we have for all our other business critical solutions,” said Joel Soppet, IT Senior Director, VMware. “With Kinvey on vCloud Air, we gained the benefits of a cost-effective enterprise class mobile infrastructure with a fully managed service and can focus on supporting our customers.”

Result

Because VMware moved to Kinvey on vCloud Air, VMware has a scalable platform that can handle the load as My VMware app adoption continues to grow. The entire migration process took only 30 days, which meant VMware could remain focused on driving app improvement to end users instead of getting bogged down in migration.

By leveraging a fully managed service like Kinvey, VMware was also freed from the maintenance and daily grind of keeping up with the pace of mobile change and scale. Again, this enables the company to focus more on developing an app that users love instead of non-value-added work.
