Insert and remove hyperlinks

Use hyperlinks to forward the reader of the text to specific websites, documents, other places in the text, or an e-mail address. You can also write tooltips. You use the Hyperlink Manager to set such hyperlinks, anchors in text, and tooltips.

To set and remove hyperlinks, use the following buttons, which are part of the basic display mode of the toolbar:

Set a hyperlink to a webpage

Perform the following:

  1. Select a word or phrase which you want to make a hyperlink.
  2. Click Hyperlink Manager or press CTRL+K.
    A window appears.
  3. On Hyperlink tab, perform the following:
    1. In URL input field, enter the address of the webpage, which you want to reference.
      For example, www.mysite.com.
    2. In Link Text input field, enter the name of the link as you want it to appear on your webpage.
      By default the word or phrase that you have selected appears in the field. You can change the word that appears as a hyperlink on your webpage.
    3. In Target dropdown box, select the way you want the linked website to open when clicked.
      For example, in a New Window or in the Same Window.
    4. In Tooltip input field, you can enter a tooltip text that appears as the user hovers over the hyperlink.
    5. In CSS Class you can change the formatting of the link by applying a specific CSS.
  4. When finished, click OK.
    The system sets the hyperlink and changes its formatting.

NOTE: If you do not select a word or phrase, but only place the cursor where you want to set a hyperlink, the text that appears on the webpage as a hyperlink is the URL address of the webpage which you are linking.
If you select a word or phrase, but delete the contents of the Link Text field, the URL address will appear instead of the selected word or phrase.

Set a hyperlink to an e-mail address

  1. Select a word or phrase which you want to make a hyperlink.
    When the hyperlink is clicked on the website it opens your e-mail client.
  2. Click Hyperlink Manager or press CTRL+K.
    A window appears.
  3. On E-mail tab, perform the following:
    1. In Address input field, enter the e-mail address which you want to reference.

      For example, john@mydomain.com.

    2. In Link Text input field, enter the name of the link as you want it to appear on your webpage.

      NOTE: The Link Text input field appears only if you have not selected any text for the hyperlink. In this case you must enter text that appears as hyperlink text on your website.

    3. In Subject input field, enter the subject of the e-mail.
      You can predefine the subject of the e-mails.
    4. In Tooltip input field, you can enter a tooltip text that appears as the user hovers over the hyperlink.
    5. In CSS Class you can change the formatting of the link by applying a specific CSS.
  4. When finished, click OK.
    The system sets the hyperlink and changes its formatting.

Create a tooltip

You can create a tooltip for a word or phrase which do not link to a website or a place in the text. The tooltip appears when the user hovers over the word or phrase.
  1. Select a word or phrase which you want to make a hyperlink.
  2. Click Hyperlink Manager or press CTRL+K.
    A window appears.
  3. On Hyperlink tab, in Tooltip input field, you can enter a tooltip text that appears as the user hovers over the hyperlink.
  4. When finished, click OK.

NOTE: You can also set a tooltip for a hyperlink to a website or a hyperlink to an anchor in the text. For more information, see the above procedures.

Edit a hyperlink

  1. To edit a hyperlink, place the cursor on the hyperlink and open the context menu.
  2. Select Properties…
    The Hyperlink Manager opens.

Link Text:

Enter the following sentence in the text editor:

Use Sitefinity CMS to develop webpages.

Select Sitefinity CMS and open the Hyperlink Manager.

In Link Text input field the word Sitefinity CMS appears.

If you leave it like this, on your webpage the following will appear:

Use Sitefinity CMS to develop webpages.

You can then change the text of the hyperlink. For example, Sitefinity CMS 4.2.

Without link text:

Enter the following sentence in the text editor:

For more information, see

Place the cursor at the end of the sentence, open the Hyperlink Manager, and enter www.mysite.com in the URL field. Leave the Link Text input field empty.

The following appears on your webpage:

For more information, see /

Hyperlink to e-mail:

Enter the following sentence.

Contact us if you need help.

Select Contact us, open the Hyperlink Manages and set a link to e-mail. In Address field enter john@mydomain.com, in Subject field, enter support.

The following will appear on the webpage

Contact us if you need help.

When the user clicks the link, their mail client opens a new email where john@mydomain.com already appears in the address box and the subject of the e-mail is support.

Remove Link (CTRL+SHIFT+K)

  1. To remove a hyperlink to a webpage, a specific anchor in the text, an e-mail address, or a tooltip, place the cursor on the hyperlinked word or phrase.
  2. Click Remove Link in the toolbar, select Remove Link from the context menu of the link, or press CTRL+SHIFT+K.
    The system removes the link and the formatting.
