Add custom fields to the Checkout widget

You can create custom widgets or solutions for checkout according to your business needs, such as a special one-page checkout. This article shows how this can be achieved using the API, so that you can integrate the code into your solution.

This technique has you create a web form, and then use the code it provides, as follows:

Create Checkout.ascx.

Create Checkout.ascx.cs.

NOTE: The Checkout.ascx.designer.cs code is created automatically (auto-generated code).

Modify the Checkout widget's templates
In the Shipping information step page you will add a checkbox for newsletter subscription. In the Preview step page you will add a textbox for a gift message. To add the fields you will modify the respective widgets templates for the Checkout widget.
Create the custom fields for the CartOrder and Order classes
You will create custom fields for the CartOrder and Order objects. This will create columns in the respective tables for storing the values of the two new fields.
Persist the values of the fields in the CartOrder instance
When the user inputs a value in the custom field and navigates to the next step, you have to intercept this action, get the value of the field and set it to the custom field of the customer’s CartOrder instance. Saving the instance will write the value in the database. After placing the order the values of the custom fields will be automatically transferred from the cart order to the order.
