You can base page templates on custom layout templates you created. Thus, you have full control over the file and can edit it from file system. In addition, in Sitefinity CMS you can add widgets to the template. Once you create the layout in the mvc/views/layout folder of the resource package or in the root of the project, Sitefinity CMS automatically creates a page template in the file system that you can use to base pages on. All further modification to the file are reflected in the page templates, based on it.
NOTE: In case you are working with Web Forms or hybrid templates, you can create or upload custom template and .master file.
