If you had to guess, what’s the one word employees dread hearing in the workplace? The answer might not be what you’d expect: change.

Big changes in the workplace often strike fear in the hearts of employees who can become used to how things have always been done. Major changes such as acquisitions can indeed be scary, but according to Karen Padir, President of Application Development at Progress, the key is to focus on the opportunities change enables.

Recently, Fortune Insider asked readers to respond to the question, “How do you lead a team during a time of transition?” Padir’s answer, which was featured online in the article, “The One Word Employees Dread Hearing in the Workplace,” explores why she thinks change in the workplace should make employees feel excited about working toward a common goal.

Padir goes on to explain that successfully managing a team through a transition includes maintaining focus, communicating that change breeds opportunity and working to unify divergent priorities. “When managers stay focused on the company vision and help employees recognize how their valuable contributions are needed to attain it, the transition will likely be a much smoother one,” she said.
