Christmas cheer

December 25, 2005 Data Platform

I write this entry from Dublin, Ireland where I'm staying with my folks for the Christmas week. In just a week it is next to impossible to switch one's brain off; however, some interesting observations as to the technology environment here: 100% Mobile penetration was reached just last week - a significant milestone by any measure considering the economic miracle certainly in my memory and according to more informed analysis.

However the contrast is stark when you consider the broadband penetration rates which registers at 5% as the probably the lowest in Europe. Why this disparity? It is primarily a function of a restricted market, a dominant player and a spineless competition authority that is unable to alter the market dynamics so the consumer has a choice. Very early on in Ireland's mobile market competition was introduced: the result, a dynamic market which sustains four networks, all of which offer the latest in 3G technology.

Otherwise Christmas is in full swing here and in a few hours I will be participating in the annual swim in the public baths. Finger crossed pneumonia will not quickly follow.
