Brocacef Cuts Time to Implement Healthcare Reimbursements Rule Changes with Progress Corticon

October 11, 2021 Digital Experience, Corticon

The Brocacef Group used Progress Corticon to manage a complex healthcare reimbursement system that involves millions of price calculations each year.

In this Success Story Spotlight, we look at Brocacef, a leading distributor of pharmaceuticals and owner of a large chain of Dutch pharmacies. Brocacef cut the time it took to execute rule changes from 1.5 weeks to 1.5 hours using Corticon, enhancing profitability and customer satisfaction while reducing errors.

CHALLENGE

Brocacef Group's contracts with healthcare companies are renegotiated every year, and the company only has a limited time to apply the numerous changes. The organization noticed that the frequency and number of changes were outpacing its manual reimbursement process.

SOLUTION

Brocacef sought to automate payments and decided that a business rules engine would be the best way to handle the growing complexity of the Dutch healthcare market. The new solution needed to be built on a rule-based framework that could be easily maintained by the organization.

The company conducted a thorough market analysis and was particularly impressed by Progress Corticon. Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Flexibility with which business analysts were able to model the decision rules
  • Integrate all rules without requiring any programming
  • Automatically perform complex calculations for production prices and drug discounts
  • Quickly test the associated scenarios

According to Casper Otto, Director Technology of Brocacef Group, the most significant benefit was the possibility to reduce medication errors. Otto explained, "Speed is critical for us, but error mitigation is imperative. We cannot afford to give people the wrong drugs; those kinds of mistakes are too expensive."

RESULT

Brocacef has seen substantial bottom-line results with Corticon, lowering costs while increasing profitability and customer satisfaction. Brocacef was able to completely automate the billing process for health insurance while also allowing business analysts to make adjustments quickly, easily, and without errors.

"Thanks to Corticon, we're completely in control of the business," said Otto, as Corticon enables non-IT experts to document and manage business logic outside the application code.
