What's New in OpenEdge 11

What's New: OpenEdge 11 Top Capabilities

1. Business Process Management (BPM)

Business Process Management (BPM) is now available as an integrated capability of the OpenEdge 11.3 platform.

OpenEdge BPM fully supports stateful processes, human interaction and provides access to several managed adapters for rapid development and deployment of process-oriented applications.

Security across the BPM system and the application tier of an OpenEdge application is now unified and seamless.

The powerful ProDataSet facility of the OpenEdge is now fully accessible from OpenEdge BPM enabling convenient and secure access to data in a form suitable for consumption by an OpenEdge application.

2. Business Rules Management System (BRMS)

Automate even the most complex decision-making logic in your applications. With OpenEdge 11.3, you can now benefit from the integration of Progress Corticon with the OpenEdge platform.

Programmatic access to a Corticon decision service is now a simple callable interface from ABL, no longer requiring an explicit Web Service call.

OpenEdge Database Schema can be imported into the Corticon rules modeling facility as a vocabulary for developing rules sets. This capability increases the level of sharing of application data across the OpenEdge platform and ensures a consistent framework for developing applications.

3. Mobility

Jumpstart your Mobile App development with OpenEdge's fast and easy "write-once, run-anywhere" solution.

Introduced in OpenEdge 11.2, OpenEdge Mobile removes the need to learn device-specific languages or development environments, while enabling the creation of full-featured applications that can access all of the most important device capabilities, such as camera, GPS, and microphone.

4. Express Mobile

As a productivity aid for the rapid development of mobile applications, “Express Mobile” is now available with OpenEdge 11.3 to completely generate and deploy a mobile app from an existing OpenEdge database schema (either a single table or a ProDataSet).

For evolving mobile applications, the Express Mobile facility also supports adding new objects to an existing project.

5. REST Adapter

Open up your application to a world of unlimited connectivity, to any app on any platform.

The OpenEdge 11.3 REST Adapter leverages the power of XML to give your application the ability to integrate with any other application, written in any language and on any platform.

6. AppBuilder Integration

Bring the familiar development experience of the AppBuilder together with the extensibility and rich feature set of the Eclipse platform.

Improvements to the AppBuilder's integration into Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge provide the features and usability you need for your AppBuilder-based code development.

With OpenEdge 11.3 it's easier than ever to build and maintain ABL-based applications in the Eclipse environment.

7. World's First Database with Built-in Multi-tenancy

Slash the cost of developing and maintaining an OpenEdge application targeted at multiple sets of users.

With the release of OpenEdge 11, Progress Software delivered the world's first database with built-in support for multi-tenancy.

A standalone application can become multi-tenant without having to change a single line of business logic.

Data storage, data access, and object operations are tenant-based and secure

8. Tenant Level Recovery and Index Rebuild Operations

New in OpenEdge 11.3, recovery and index rebuild operations can now be performed at the tenant level, i.e., operational database activities for a single tenant can now be performed without impacting other tenants of the database.

Included is the capability to restore multiple tables per tenant concurrently or the data for multiple tenants. Shell scripting provides for automating the process as desired.

One can also rebuild the indexes for a single tenant while the other tenants remain operational. The tenant whose indexes are being rebuilt must be off-line, however.

9. Improved AppServer Performance

Shift your AppServer performance into hyperdrive with single-run and singleton procedures.

Operations that previously required multiple round trips from the client to the AppServer are now accomplished with just one round trip.

10. JTA with Replication

Incorporate disaster recovery into your distributed transaction solution by running OpenEdge Replication together with JTA.

With OpenEdge 11.3 you are able to run OpenEdge Replication and JTA at the same time on the same database.

11. ABL Scratch Editor

Jot down and run a snippet of ABL code in the Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge without the heavy lifting.

The new Scratch Editor in Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge allows a developer to write and execute ABL code without having to save it as a project. Features in the Scratch Editor include content assist, color-coding, and syntax-checking.

12. Certification of New Platforms

Stay current with the latest Windows platform technology.

OpenEdge 11.3 certified support for Microsoft Windows 64-bit architectures with a 64-bit Microsoft Windows client, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, in addition to continuing support for earlier Windows platforms as well as HP-UX, IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, and Linux.

13. Performance Improvements

Push to the front of the pack with performance enhancements across the product.

OpenEdge 11 delivers performance improvements for table reads, table deletions, drivers, instantiation of objects, SQL queries, and database operations, to name just a few.

14. Cloud/Arcade

Simplify the process to test and deploy your application for SaaS and Cloud.

With Progress Arcade's assortment of pre-populated development environments in the Cloud, your SaaS and Cloud development needs are met in minutes.
