Transaction Monitoring and Alerting

Reliable Transaction Monitoring and Alerting across Heterogeneous Systems

Because of the global competitive environment in which there is no room for IT problems, effective transaction monitoring and alerting for distributed, interconnected applications are necessary for their successful operation and business transaction assurance. At the same time, the operation of these applications must be cost-effective.

However, in today's distributed, interconnected applications components of the same process execute across heterogeneous computing resources that often are located in different places and owned by different groups. Unlike traditional applications, there is no single group of systems dedicated to running a process to easily monitor. As a result, how can organizations know what's happening—especially if there are performance and availability issues—somewhere in the application?

Unmatched Transaction Monitoring—plus Alerting

Progress® Actional® products have a powerful yet cost-effective monitoring and alerting solution that enables companies to operate their distributed, interconnected applications reliably; assure business transactions execute quickly; and meet SLAs.

  • For monitoring, Actional's Flow Mapping™ technology auto-discovers and maps the end-to-end process flow of all services in a transaction end-to-end, revealing service dependencies. In fact, Actional easily integrates and interoperates with a wide range of heterogeneous computing resources—applications, data sources, network devices, middleware, and registries/repositories—and mediates multiple message protocols. Just as important, this unprecedented visibility occurs without the coding and manual configuration required by other solutions for end-to-end monitoring—lowering IT costs.

  • For alerting on service levels, Actional provides easy-to-use wizards for creating policies that track a variety of behaviors, including response times, data throughput, and frequency of faults on a per-transaction or an aggregate level.

Alerting: How It Works

When application performance hits a policy-based alert threshold, Actional generates an alert and gathers information to present a complete view of the nodes involved in the violation in a flow map of the end-to-end "violating" transaction, as well as statistics related to the violation. These can be used to quickly trace back the developing problem to the system that is the root cause—to resolve the issue quickly without the hours of IT diagnostics typically required.
