Dr. John Bates

Dr. John Bates, Founder and General Manager

Dr. John Bates is General Manager for Progress Software's Apama Division. In this role, John is responsible for the management of sales, marketing, products and consulting services.

Prior to joining Progress, John was the Co-Founder, President and Chief Technology Officer of Apama, the pioneering Complex Event Processing software vendor acquired by Progress in April 2005. In this role, John led Apama's technology and go-to-market strategy and was co-inventor of the patented technology that is now a key part of the Progress Apama platform. Prior to Apama, John was a tenured academic at Cambridge University in the UK where he led research into distributed computing systems.

John is a respected expert, frequent author and speaker in the areas of Capital Markets technology, with a specific focus on algorithmic trading, risk and surveillance, and distributed computing systems, with a specific focus on Complex Event Processing.

Richard Bentley

Richard Bentley, Vice President of Field Technical Services

Richard Bentley is Vice President of Field Technical Services for the Apama division, focusing on the Capital Markets vertical. He leads all Apama Consulting and Pre-Sales activities world-wide, ensuring successful customer deployments of the Apama Event Processing platform.

Prior to joining Progress, Richard ran Consulting and Product Management for Apama from 2000 through to the Progress acquisition in April, 2005. He joined Apama following three years as Project Manager with Xerox's European Research Library, where he was responsible for conducting and managing research and leading technology transfer to Xerox Business Divisions. As an experienced practitioner and assessor for the Capability Maturity Model of software development, he also led the Lab's Software Process Improvement activities, and participated in assessments of other Xerox sites across Europe and the US.

Richard holds a PhD in Computer Science from Lancaster University, UK, and spent several years in post-doctoral Research, including a 3 year period in Germany. He is the author of numerous academic papers and journal articles.

Scott Grayson

Scott Grayson, Managing Director, Head of Global Sales

Scott Grayson is Managing Director - Head of Global Sales for the Apama Capital Markets products. Scott has over twenty years of experience in selling sophisticated software products within Capital Markets. Before joining Apama, Scott served a number of years as Managing Director - Head of North American Sales at Algorithmics, a prominent risk management software and consulting firm.

Prior to Algorithmics, Scott had been a partner at Cobb Trading, a boutique equities and options trading firm. Scott has also served as Director of Sales at Numerix, a provider of complex analytics products to the world's leading commercial and investment banks. His career also includes sales management roles at Institutional Investor, Bankers Trust, and Bank of America where he helped those firms successfully introduce sophisticated new products into the market.

Dr. Giles Nelson

Dr. Giles Nelson, Senior Director of Strategy and Evangelism

Dr Giles Nelson is responsible for the strategy and evangelism of Progress Apama. As CEP technology comes of age, he is responsible for maintaining the company's market leading position in this space. In his role, he develops global business strategies and manages technology innovation into new markets, as well as bolstering market share in the Capital Markets sector.

Before his current role, Nelson was CTO EMEA where was he was focused on providing customers with innovative business solutions using Progress' early-market technologies throughout the region. Prior to joining Progress Software, he was the co-founder of Apama, the pioneering event processing software vendor acquired by Progress Software in April 2005, where he co-invented the core patented technology.

Nelson is a regular speaker at leading technology and Capital Markets industry events and is published and quoted widely in the media. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Mark D. Spiteri

Dr. Mark D. Spiteri, Director of Software Development

Dr. Mark D. Spiteri is Director of Software Development for the Apama product line. After completing his PhD at Cambridge University in Distributed Event-Driven Systems, Mark was a post-doctoral Research Associate at the same University. Mark joined Apama as a Software Engineer and after a period leading the core Event Correlation development team, he took over engineering management of the entire Apama product line. Mark has led Apama's research, design and development since. Mark is a frequent speaker and author on both CEP broadly, as well as the specifics of its usage within Capital Markets.

Dr. Gareth Smith

Dr. Gareth Smith, Director of Product Management

Dr Gareth Smith is Director of Product Management for the Apama Division. He is responsible for defining product strategy and vision. Prior to this role he was the Principal Architect for the Apama Division and, before the Progress acquisition, was Director of Pre-Sales for Apama.

Previous to joining Apama in 2001, he completed a PhD in conjunction with IBM laboratories and then went on to become a lecturer in computer science at Lancaster University in the UK. Here, he collaborated in many international research projects, including some visiting positions, and published a range of academic papers.

Chris Martins

Chris Martins, Director of Marketing

Leading the Apama marketing efforts is Chris Martins. Chris has been involved with software marketing for close to twenty years. Prior to assuming the role of Director of Marketing for Apama, he was Principal Product Marketing Manager for Apama products. His background also includes other marketing roles associated with Progress "real-time" products, as well as stints at Eastman Software/Wang and PC DOCS, where he was responsible for marketing of the workflow and document imaging product lines of those companies.

Chris also has worked as an industry analyst, having been Research Director within the CRM practice of the Aberdeen Group. Chris is a graduate of Middlebury College.
