How to Build Tableau reports on Oracle Data using the DataDirect Oracle Driver for JDBC

Introduction

Progress DataDirect’s Oracle JDBC Driver offers a high-performing, secure and reliable connectivity solution, for JDBC applications to access Oracle data. You can use it to create or analyze reports with tools such as SAS, Yellowfin, SAP, Sisense, Denodo, Cognos, Jaspersoft, Tableau, Tibco, OBIEE, and more. In this tutorial, you will learn how to configure the DataDirect Oracle driver within Tableau Desktop to create reports. These steps can also be used to configure any JDBC connection with Tableau.

    • If you are on Linux, extract the PROGRESS_DATADIRECT_JDBC_ORACLE_WIN.zip and run the PROGRESS_DATADIRECT_JDBC_INSTALL.jar to start the installation.
  3. After you have completed the installation, you can find the Progress DataDirect Oracle driver .jar file.
    • On Windows, you will find it at C:\ProgramFiles\Progress\DataDirect\JDBC_60\lib\oracle.jar

    • Paste the JDBC connection string that you have built into the “URL” textbox. Enter credentials for username and password, and click on “Sign In.”
      For example: jdbc:datadirect:oracle://MyServer:1521;SID=ORCL
other databases (jdbc) window with url filled with the connection string, username and password
  3. Tableau will then connect to the Oracle database, and the Configuration Screen will appear.
