Web-Based Training

.NET Client Development with OpenEdge Applications and VB.NET

Description

.NET Client Development with OpenEdge Applications and VB.NET covers the steps required to develop VB. NET applications that access OpenEdge business logic and data.

OpenEdge Release 10 provides developers with the tools and technologies to access application business logic from a variety of interfaces. One development environment that can be used to develop a user interface is the Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft VB.NET. With the VB.NET programming language, developers can access business logic and data written using the Progress 4GL.

Version compatibility

This course is compatible with OpenEdge 10 only.

Software requirements

Exercise files are provided for the OpenEdge 10.0A release. Throughout this training course, you will run hands-on exercises using your live versions of OpenEdge 10.0A, and Microsoft VisualStudio.net.

In order to run the sample application for this course and/or test application logic developed in exercises, you will need to be able to access an OpenEdge Application Server that is connected to a specific database. If you are unfamiliar with the setup and configuration of a database in multi-user mode or the configuration of an OpenEdge Application Server, consult with a person within your organization who can assist you with the steps that follow.

What you will learn

After taking this training, you should be able to:

  • Describe the overall architecture of a distributed OpenEdge application.
  • Set up a VB.NET project to use the required OpenEdge .NET assemblies.
  • Instantiate an OpenEdge App Object and connect to an OpenEdge AppServer.
  • Execute OpenEdge business logic from a VB.NET application.
  • Use ADO.NET DataSets and DataTables in conjunction with an OpenEdge application.
  • Create reusable .NET user interface logic.
  • Trap and process errors passed from an OpenEdge application.

Prerequisites

Learners should already be able to:

  • Show a working knowledge of the VB.NET programming language.
  • Use the Visual Studio.NET development environment.
  • Develop VB.NET Windows Forms applications.
  • Utilize ADO.NET objects, including DataSets and DataTables.
