Progress Software and rPath to Deliver Cloud Computing via Virtualization
rPath announced that Progress Software has certified rPath's rBuilder for its OpenEdge platform. This allows independent software vendors (ISVs) to use rPath technology to create Software as a Service (SaaS) applications as virtual appliances that include/leverage the Progress OpenEdge business application development platform.

Iona To Be Bought By Progress For $4.05-share, Or $162 Mln
Iona Technologies Plc, the Dublin supplier of software-integration technology, agreed to be acquired for $4.05 a share, or $162 million, by Progress Software Corp., the companies said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Finally, a SOA infrastructure deal that makes good sense on both sides," Jason Bloomberg, an analyst with the SOA consultancy Zapthink, said via e-mail Wednesday. "Iona gets to be part of an organization that has strong sales and marketing, as well as a deep customer base, and Progress gets some of the better technology on the market at what is arguably a fire-sale price."

Progress Software has assembled quite a collection of SOA and enterprise computing technologies in recent years, which includes ESB provider Sonic, SOA management/governance vendor Actional, mainframe data integration specialist DataDirect, and mainframe-to-Web vendor NEON Systems (now part of the DataDirect Shadow line).

Progress Software acquires Iona--good luck
The Iona acquisition rumors have been flying for months, and now we know the winner (loser?) of the prized pig: Progress Software. This is a not a bad purchase for Progress, which does a lot of business in legacy application integration. Iona's CORBA products are good and fit into the Progress customer base. What they'll do with 3 of the same products (Artix, Sonic, and Servicemix) I have no idea.

Progress Eats Iona -- Now What?
It was no secret that Iona was looking for a buyer, and Progress seems like a logical acquirer. Now, they have more in their shop to sell in the SOA space and a nice way to penetrate deeper in a market that's still emerging. Also, good price. For the legacy business alone, $106 million seems well worth the money. However, I don't have the specifics around the deal.

What Does Progress' Takeover Mean for Iona’s Open Source Strategy?
Carnac the Magnificent has answered the question in the last envelope in the independent middleware market: Progress Software (PRGS) will acquire Iona (IONA). My prediction that it would most likely be another so-called closed source software provider pairing up with an open source provider turned out to be correct. My prediction that it would be IBM (IBM), Sun (JAVA), TIBCO (TIBX), Novell (NOVL), a Telco or a packaged app supplier (as in Workday acquiring Iona spinout Cape Clear)? Not so good.
