Built on Eclipse, Shadow Studio provides a highly graphical, intuitive interface to allow developers to create, administer and manage integration streams between industry standard J2EE and .NET development environments and mainframe data and programs residing in mainframe relational and non-relational data sources and legacy application environments.

Shadow Studio provides developers with a single, enterprise view across all mainframe integration components, automatically discovering instances of Shadow running on the mainframe, to enable in-production, monitoring and management of critical integration streams.

Shadow Studio provides specific role-based GUI perspectives to accommodate the specific needs of the  developers and systems programmers working with the breadth of integration resources available through Shadow (mainframe data maps, COBOL programs, 3270 screens, or Change Data Capture event profiles).

In effect, Shadow shortens development life cycles, reduces mainframe Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and accelerates project Return on Investment (ROI). Shadow Studio offers a high-productivity development environment that dramatically reduces time-to-market for mainframe modernization initiatives. Studio masks the complexity of working with proprietary mainframe data sources to allow developers to work within existing development frameworks and environments to:

Progress DataDirect has built a reputation on supporting industry standards, so it is no surprise Shadow Studio is built on industry-standard Eclipse for increased integration flexibility and developer familiarity.

Shadow Studio enables developers and systems programmers to easily build and manage new composite applications by transparently reusing mainframe data sources and legacy application environments. The user experience with Shadow Studio is very straightforward – essentially point-and-click.

A developer or systems programmer simply chooses the mainframe data, COBOL program, or screen-based target resource (DB2, CICS, IDMS, etc), then selects the industry-standard client driver or interface (ODBC, ADO.NET, JDBC, SOAP, BPEL, etc.), and after a few simple steps, the mainframe data source is available like any relational Java or .NET object with Shadow Studio automatically generating the required components (C#, Java Bean, or COBOL), Web services and starter programs.

  • Support for J2EE and .NET –  Shadow automatically generates components (C#, Java Bean, .NET or COBOL), Web services and starter programs to accelerate integration of  both screen-based and COBOL programs.
  • Integration with CICS Explorer – Shadow seamlessly integrates with CICS Explorer for development and administration of  Web services or events.
  • Web Services Orchestration/BPEL – Together, the Shadow BPEL designer and BPEL runtime management interface orchestrate platform independent, heterogeneous Web services into a BPEL workflow that supports long running, macro Web services.
  • Systems Management – Shadow is a fully-integrated, real-time, systems management environment for integration scenarios that traces, integrates, and graphically exposes activity from all mainframe nodes within a Sysplex.
  • Data Connectivity Administration – Shadow provides outstanding diagnostic and control facilities and offers users a single, integrated solution to identify, diagnose and correct data connectivity issues between distributed ODBC, ADO.NET, and JDBC client drivers and mainframes.
  • Performance Testing – Shadow is a comprehensive testing facility for SQL statements, CDC event profiles and Web services, ensuring quality and reliability, verifying conformance, and rigorously testing against all supported mainframe data sources.
  • Real-time Trace/Browse – Shadow delivers comprehensive run-time diagnostic-capture routines that control the entire Shadow mainframe server environment, which can be consolidated into multiple Shadow trace/browse files (one for each server) then into a single view. Shadow's trace/browse feature uses agent capture technology on each node to transfer diagnostics in real-time to the Shadow Studio.
