Progress Software Releases ObjectStore Version 6.1; ObjectStore Division Establishes Foundation for Product Strategy
BEDFORD, Mass. (BUSINESS WIRE)
04-Mar-2003
Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq: PRGS), a leading supplier of technology for building e-business solutions, today announced the release of ObjectStore(R) Version 6.1, the market leading object-oriented database acquired through the purchase of eXcelon Corporation in December of last year. Progress has integrated ObjectStore into its overall product line, establishing a new division dedicated to the development and support of the product, which has already delivered Version 6.1. This latest release of ObjectStore dramatically improves the operational effectiveness of the database with the addition of increased availability, clustering and replication support. These enhancements include support for mutual takeover capabilities for clustered fail-over, interfaces to support replication across wide area networks and support for software upgrades of live systems. Additionally, Version 6.1 offers support for the latest development platforms such as Visual Studio.NET, Sun Java JDK 1.4, and Red Hat Linux 8.0.
ObjectStore provides all the traditional services and benefits of an enterprise database while offering a very flexible programming paradigm that seamlessly integrates application and storage data models. Unlike typical application databases, ObjectStore uses a patented Cache-Forward(TM) architecture that allows an application's data to be maintained in memory, while still providing traditional transactional capabilities. Organizations can build high-performance data management systems by manipulating unlimited amounts of information in a format that makes sense to their business, without having to conform to the formats required by conventional databases. This makes ObjectStore an extremely powerful tool for developing massively scalable, high-performance business applications, as evidenced through the products popularity in the financial, airline and telecom industries where zero downtime, 24x7 availability, real-time feeds and data analysis are critical.
"The ObjectStore technology has always been well-respected in the industry, and the product has been the market leader among object-oriented databases," said Carl Olofson, program manager at IDC. "Progress Software brings practical insights and a proven track record managing partner relationships to deliver business solutions to customers. This is reflected in a long history of profitability in the embedded DBMS space. IDC believes that customers will reap the benefits of synergies between the experienced business-oriented management team of Progress and the technologists that continue to improve the ObjectStore product line."
In the past, a large percentage of ObjectStore's sales have been as an embedded database for OEMs, which fits well with the Progress partnering model. Moving forward, Progress will extend to the ObjectStore division its legendary commitment to "simplify the job of building the world's best business applications" by making the technology more accessible to a wider customer base. This includes simplifying ObjectStore's basic functionality, as well as adding extensions to support specific applications in targeted vertical markets.
"ObjectStore is a proven product with a track record of providing significant flexibility and business value to its customers," said Peter Sliwkowski, general manager of ObjectStore. "It is exciting to have the opportunity to help guide ObjectStore's future and to expand the reach of the world's leading object-oriented database by leveraging the established business expertise of Progress Software Corporation."
