Progress Software and Datasul Deliver ERP On-Demand Throughout Latin America

SaaS model seen as strategic growth opportunity for Datasul; more than 350 customers subscribed to date

BEDFORD, Mass., (BUSINESS WIRE)
27-Nov-2007

Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a global supplier of application infrastructure software used to develop, deploy, integrate and manage business applications, announced today that its application partner Datasul S.A. (Bovespa: DSUL3) is further leveraging Progress Software products and technology to offer an on-demand Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system deployed via a software as a service (SaaS) model. Datasul, a trusted supplier of custom-built enterprise management technology, now offers a comprehensive ERP system, tailored to specific business needs and deployed using an affordable SaaS subscription model.

Initial ERP deployments can be complicated and costly, creating a barrier which many companies do not have the resources to manage. Further leveraging Progress Software's Products, Datasul has effectively removed the significant upfront barriers to success associated with initial ERP deployments by providing its customers with complete ERP capabilities via a monthly subscription, available through any web browser, Paulo Caputo, business development director, of Datasul, said, "For the past 29 years, Datasul has focused on building a strong relationship with its customers and has developed more than 100 different enterprise solutions, helping them improve their competitiveness. The SaaS business model allows us to offer full-featured ERP systems with a predictable cost model, zero upfront costs, and easy access through the web. This opens up many new business opportunities for Datasul and allows us to offer our applications to an even broader market."

More than 350 Datasul customers use subscription-based, on-demand applications. While this number represents 10 percent of the company's 2007 revenue, Datasul expects the on-demand portion of their business to grow to at least 20 percent over the next year.

Datasul, a Progress application partner and Brazilian market leader, serves over 2,800 customers and 274,000 end-users in Latin America with their ERP deployments. Datasul ERP applications are based on the Progress(R) OpenEdge(R) business application platform, which enables the company to deploy their applications as a SaaS, on-demand offering.

Paulo Caputo continued, "Unlike other SaaS programs that focus on just hosting, Progress Software and Datasul developed a complete solution for transforming our applications into true on-demand offerings using SOA and multi-tenancy reference models. The Progress business and technical empowerment programs include assessment, business planning and technical planning that helped guide us through every step of the transformation process, helping us reduce the cost, complexity and time-to-market for our SaaS-enabled enterprise management software."

Guascor Group Brazil, an energy generation company, has already realized tremendous operational benefits from their SaaS implementation. Headquartered in Spain, Guascor Group Brazil has maintained global operations for over 40 years. The Brazilian operation began as a project focused on Electrical Energy Generation in the Amazon region. The business management system (ERP) became a necessity as it allows for the efficient and unified management of business information in the many regions Guascor operates.

Eduardo Vargas, CIO of Guascor Group Brazil says: "We chose the Datasul Applications (Logistics, Controlling, Finance, Manufacturing and HR) because of the low entry cost and the low total cost of ownership. It was also essential that the system could run without a great deal of on-premise support or heavy duty IT resources. The Datasul applications only require us to employ the efforts of four IT professionals to support more than 130 ERP users spread across four states in Brazil, and most importantly they are able to focus on business needs rather than Infrastructure issues."

"The global market is embracing the benefits of the software as a service model as a means to quickly enter new geographic markets, and Grupo Guascor is yet another example of how SaaS is delivering real-world benefits," said Colleen Smith, director of SaaS for Progress Software. "Progress Software now has Application Partners delivering SaaS applications to customers in over 20 countries around the world."

Progress provides a powerful application infrastructure that includes the Progress OpenEdge platform, the first integrated platform optimized for the development and deployment of service-oriented business applications, and the Progress Sonic ESB(R) (Enterprise Service Bus), the industry-leading integration backbone for distributed environments. Applications built on the OpenEdge platform are reliable and scalable, with a lower total cost of ownership than other platforms.
