ObjectStore Announces Version 6.1, Incorporating New Standards to Ease Development and Porting of Java-Based Applications
Small Footprint Version of ObjectStore(R), PSE Pro(TM), Adds Support for Java(R) Data Objects
BEDFORD, Mass. (BUSINESS WIRE)
01-Mar-2004
ObjectStore, a division of Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq: PRGS - News) providing products and services that empower organizations to manage data in real time, today announced the release of ObjectStore® Version 6.1 SP2, which includes enhanced and integrated data management tools, including performance tuning and visual inspection. Additionally, this release includes support for Java® Data Objects (JDO) in the small footprint version of ObjectStore, PSE Pro(TM) Version 6.1 SP2. ObjectStore, the leading complex data management platform, allows applications to store and manipulate data at in-memory speeds.
"Integrated tools and standards compliance make our software easier to work with and more accessible," said Peter Sliwkowski, general manager, ObjectStore. "We've integrated our broad range of tools into one platform and added JDO support to PSE Pro, a precursor to adding it to ObjectStore later in the year. JDO is one of the standards facilitating the growth of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). RFID is going to cause an explosion of data that is going to overwhelm traditional systems. ObjectStore's ability to manage that enormous quantity of data, in real time, is uniquely suited for RFID."
The newest release of PSE Pro for Java supports the JDO API 1.0.1, as defined by JSR-12. This capability allows programmers to more easily develop ObjectStore applications, by eliminating the need to learn proprietary programming interfaces. PSE Pro's JDO interface allows developers to define databases and transactions, and select and transform stored data into native Java programming language objects.
PSE Pro for Java is ideal for transaction-oriented, single-process applications. It decreases development costs and facilitates distributed application development and deployment. ObjectStore-enabled applications improve the performance of embedded software, mobile devices that have data management needs, and middle-tier web applications.
"We've been using PSE Pro within our configuration management tool, SpectrumSCM, for several years now," said William Brown, chief architect, Spectrum Software. "PSE Pro provides us with excellent performance and is a perfect match for our application, and of course, we have the ability to quickly move from PSE Pro to a full-blown ObjectStore implementation for large enterprise customers. We are very pleased that the ObjectStore division was able to provide support for JDO in PSE Pro. Standards support helps us more easily develop our application, and lowers the cost of developing our product."
The release of ObjectStore Version 6.1 SP2 includes PSE Pro, for Java and C++, and the following tools: ObjectStore Active Toolkit, which provides an ADO & OLE DB interface to ObjectStore to ease integration with tools that expect data to be presented in a relational form; ObjectStore Inspector, a graphical browser that enables users to view, query and edit data stored in ObjectStore; and ObjectStore Performance Expert, a performance analysis and monitoring tool that allows developers and database administrators to graphically view performance-related information about ObjectStore servers and clients.
Availability
ObjectStore Version 6.1 SP2 will be available at the end of the first quarter. At that time, a free of charge, 30-day evaluation version of PSE Pro for Java can be downloaded from the ObjectStore web site (http://www.objectstore.net/register2/index.ssp). Current ObjectStore customers will be able to download Version 6.1 at http://download.objectstore.net/i/esupport/Portal/logon.asp.
