ObjectStore Announces First EPC-Compliant Database Technology for Radio Frequency Identification

High-performance Data Management Technology to Accelerate Implementation of RFID Solution

NEW YORK (BUSINESS WIRE)
12-Jan-2004

ObjectStore, a division of Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq: PRGS) providing products and services that empower organizations to manage complex data in real time, today announced the industry's first Electronic Product Code (EPC) compliant, real time in-memory database designed to collect, correlate and propagate data generated from Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags.

RFID technology will revolutionize the supply chain by providing more accurate information about product movement, stock rotation, inventory levels and other management information, in real-time. With instant insight into key business information, companies will be able to streamline their supply chains, reducing costs and improving customer service in the process.

Spending on radio frequency identification technology used to track goods in retail supply chains is expected to grow to nearly $1.3 billion in 2008, according to IDC, as quoted in an article posted on Yahoo: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=74&e=7&u=/cmp/17300023

The EPC Version 1.0 specification is a new standard being developed by EPCglobal, a joint venture between EAN International and the Uniform Code Council (UCC). The EPC specification defines standards for the development and deployment of RFID technology that allow applications to detect, track and control items in the supply chain. Items that have RFID tags are tracked by RFID readers and the resulting EPC information can be processed and propagated to enterprise applications.

"Manufacturers of automotive, consumer products, electronics, food and beverage, industrial and medical products use QAD applications at approximately 5,200 licensed sites in more than 80 countries and in as many as 26 languages," said Jim Kirkley, chief technology officer of QAD (Nasdaq: QADI), a Progress Application Partner. "RFID and EPC compliance are important to many of our customers since they often use a variety of backend databases. We applaud this announcement from the ObjectStore division of PSC, our primary technology provider for our flagship manufacturing product, MFG/Pro, for the leadership it demonstrates."

ObjectStore's Real Time Event Engine a Step Ahead of Initial EPC Specification

ObjectStore's Real Time Event Engine supports RFID in three ways: by providing the industry's first real time in-memory database (REID), through EPC code support, and RFID Savant Interfaces.

"ObjectStore's Real Time Event Engine is specifically designed to support the performance demands that RFID solutions generate," said Mark Palmer, director of product management, ObjectStore. "As RFID technology matures, applications will gain the ability to track products throughout the supply chain, down to the item level, and the amount of data generated will overwhelm traditional software solutions. ObjectStore's Real Time Event Engine is designed to collect and organize vast volumes of RFID data in real time, something that traditional, transactional systems aren't designed to do."

With Real Time Event Engine's RFID event storage capabilities, companies will be able to collect, correlate and propagate EPC data at in-memory speeds. The ObjectStore REID goes beyond the initial EPCglobal reference architecture to provide transactionally consistent, scalable, fault-tolerant EPC event processing.

The Real Time Event Engine will also support the EPCglobal standard for tag formats, specifically the 96-bit Class 1 and Class 0 EPC codes defined by the Version 1.0 specification, and the required elements of the EPCglobal "Savant" standard interfaces. Combined, these three elements of ObjectStore's Real Time Event Engine provide a standards-based platform upon which mission-critical operational systems are built.

Availability

The EPC-compliant Real Time Event Engine will be available at the end of Q1, 2004. For more information, contact sales@objectstore.net or visit www.objectstore.net.

About the ObjectStore Division

The ObjectStore division of Progress Software provides advanced data management software for developing massively scalable, high performance business applications. Renowned for performance and scalability, ObjectStore products are deployed in such industries as financial, airline and telecommunications, where real-time response while processing massive data inputs is a critical business requirement.

The flagship product, ObjectStore(R), is an object-oriented data management system built on the Virtual Memory Mapping Architecture (VMMA) and the patented Cache-Forward(TM) Architecture (CFA). Together they provide a flexible programming paradigm that seamlessly integrates application and storage models, with distributed transactional caching to provide data consistency and in-memory performance in a distributed environment. ObjectStore also provides all the traditional services and benefits of an enterprise database.
