DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET Achieves a 50 Percent Database Access Performance Improvement for Global Container Carrier OOCL

BEDFORD, Mass. (BUSINESS WIRE)
11-Jun-2006

DataDirect Technologies, an operating company of Progress Software Corporation (Nasdaq:PRGS), today announced that Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), one of the world's largest container transport and logistics companies, has reported improved speed and reliability of connectivity to its Sybase database since employing DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET as part of its electronic Customs manifest system.

Based in Hong Kong, OOCL is one of the world's leading container transport and logistics service providers, with more than 230 offices in 58 countries around the world.

The production of accurate, timely electronic Customs documents is vital to OOCL's success. In order to be given permission to unload containers at busy ports in various countries, accurate electronic documents under OOCL's carriage must be submitted to Customs in a timely manner.

The overall performance of the inbound and outbound Customs system depends on having reliable, high-performance connectivity when accessing the Sybase database that can produce the information for Customs documentation. This is a global requirement and OOCL requires thousands of documents, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for submission to various Customs and terminal ports.

"We decided to purchase DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET, initially for Australian Customs manifesting," explains Renwill Yang, Manager of OOCL's Enterprise Messaging Group. "The major technical considerations were stability, reliability and performance."

DataDirect Connect for ADO.NET is the industry's only ADO.NET data provider with a 100% managed code architecture that supports the Microsoft .Net framework, delivering secure, high-performance data connectivity.

OOCL needed high-performance data connectivity on Windows 2003 to access its Sybase ASE database server on HPUX. The company tested the DataDirect .Net drivers and the results showed an approximate 50 percent performance gain.

"The greatest challenge in implementing this system is to meet external and internal requirements in a very short time frame," said Yang. "The use of stable and reliable components definitely helped to achieve that goal."

Having successfully implemented its electronic Customs manifesting system for container ships travelling between Hong Kong and Australia, OOCL now plans to extend its use of DataDirect Connect for ADO.Net to help produce electronic Customs documents for container ships travelling to the US and other European and Asian countries.
