The California Independent System Operator has selected Actional's enterprise-class Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) management solutions to help safeguard and manage the reliable delivery of electricity.

The California ISO has the responsibility of managing California's wholesale power grid. The operation is extremely dynamic and must respond to the changing needs of the energy industry, including open-market trading and energy consumption. As a result, the organization requires a system that is exceptionally agile yet robust and reliable enough to deliver one of the state's most valuable commodities.

Dan Yee, California ISO's CIO, is tasked with designing and managing a new multi-vendor Market Redesign and Technology Upgrade (MRTU) to address the need. This ongoing project is looking to extract the benefits of a SOA approach and is an excellent architectural model from which other industries and organizations would benefit.

"After completing a rigorous proof-of-concept, we chose Actional for its enterprise-class features and functionality," said Yee. "The California ISO is committed to providing the California public with the full value of an open market system and the MRTU project will elicit the most advanced technology available to achieve that goal."

California ISO is one of the first customers to take advantage of features delivered in the recent Actional 5.5 release. These features include asynchronous alerting and tracking of individual processes which will provide increased visibility as well as auditing and logging capabilities and RSA Security integration for improved authentication and data integrity.

"The SOA market is emerging and being driven by the dynamic needs of visionary customers like California ISO," said David Gehringer, VP of Marketing for Actional. "We continue to maintain our leadership role in SOA management by developing solutions that respond to our customer's needs and deliver the full value of SOA."

About The California Independent System Operator
The California ISO is a not-for-profit public benefit corporation charged with managing the flow of electricity along California's open-market wholesale power grid. The ISO mission is to safeguard the reliable delivery of electricity and ensure equal access to 25,000 circuit miles of the "electron highway." As impartial operator of the wholesale power grid in the state, the California ISO conducts a portion of the bulk power markets. These markets are used to allocate space on transmission lines, maintain operating reserves, and match supply with demand.
