1) What business is Corticon in?

Corticon is an industry leader in the Business Rules Management System (BRMS) market. The company delivers a business rules engine that automates business decisions, enabling more efficient and responsive operations, and isolates those rules into an environment that is easy for business users to control and change.

2) Why is Progress acquiring Corticon?

Progress’ growth strategy is to help its customers build highly agile, responsive business systems with models and tools that appeal to business users.  Additionally, demand is growing for sophisticated business rules solutions that can be easily controlled by business people.  Progress believes business rules solutions are a critical component that enables enterprises to be more operationally responsive.

Corticon Business Rules is one of the best and most advanced products available on the market today.  Like BPM process models, Corticon rules models allow domain experts to collaborate closely with IT to implement exactly the rules needed, or to build and maintain the rules themselves.  This is why the Corticon Business Rules Management System (BRMS) is a perfect fit for Progress.

3) What is Business Rules and what is a Business Rules Management System?

Every business depends on rules to govern and optimize operations.  Business rules systems are used to automate important decisions, assess risk, determine customer eligibility for offers or benefits, allocate workload, comply with business policies or regulations, and many other uses. Business Rules Management Systems offer structure or control over complex decision logic and evaluations, such as determining someone’s credit score or affirming compliance with a certain company policy.

Companies deploy a Business Rules Management System to outline and manage the inputs, criteria and steps required to make and implement effective decisions that govern their processes, policies, and operations. For example, Corticon can be used for Risk Management in the banking industry to manage the complex calculations in Basel II regulations to quickly ensure that they will be consistent and compliant across channels without manual hard-coding.
