What's New in Apama 4.3

Progress Software announces the availability of Progress® Apama® Version 4.3 (November 2010). This new version includes a next-generation Event Processing Language (EPL) optimized for the concise expression of business and temporal logic.  Moreover, events can be captured as a stream with common attributes, giving developers and business users greater scalability and more control over how they can sense and respond to events.

Apama 4.3 Release Highlights:

  • *NEW * Event Processing Language (EPL)
Event processing requires a fine-tuned language to support the collecting, identifying, and processing of events. With Apama 4.3, discreet (individual) and streaming events can be processed at the same time. Apama now supports stream processing, where one or more flows of raw events can be refined into a stream with common attributes. Pressure events coming from a sensor, position events coming from an aircraft, or market data from a specific stock symbol, are all examples of potential streams. By defining event streams, code can be reduced by 50%, resulting in cleaner, clearer code.

Example of data from Temperature and Pressure sensors being combined and averaged and real-time.

Example: Events identified as streams that are coming from pressure and temperature sensors, for example, can be correlated in real-time over any period of time or by retaining any number of received events.

New keywords in the EPL can be used on event streams to perform windowing and aggregation. Event scenarios are greatly simplified and real-time decision management significantly improves operational responsiveness.

  • Enhancements In Visual Interfaces
Interactive dashboards are one of the most common actions for Apama applications. With our comprehensive dashboard solution, data streams are viewed in real-time and individual dashboard users can interact and adjust scenario rules on-the-fly. In Apama 4.3, over 120 standard visual controls are available for dashboard design. Apama simplifies working with large sets of event data by offering easy filtering functions for dashboard displays. Large data sets for tables or trending graphs are easier to develop and improves overall performance. Additionally, dashboard deployment has been simplified and new performance enhancements meet the needs of cloud-based deployments.

  • Operational Responsiveness Through Business Events
    Business Event Processing (BEP)
continues to drive operational responsiveness by enabling businesses to achieve real-time decision management. With Apama 4.3, business metrics can be easily managed, regardless of the location, format, or type of events that are available. Apama is a real-time Key Performance Indicator (KPI) toolkit for businesses who continuously process multiple types of processes and business events.
